Spring Clean Your Garden – Our Top 10 Tips

With the days getting longer, the weather warming up, and more time being spent at home;
why not take the time to get outside and get your garden ready for the warmer months. Rejuvenate and revitalize
your outdoor space with our top 10 spring cleaning tips.
1. Declutter
Collect stray toys, balls, and equipment and keep them together in one place such as outdoor storage boxes or
baskets. Give outdoor pots a good clean and discard of any broken or cracked pots. Rake up fallen leaves, pick
up fallen branches and mow the lawn.
2.Prune
The end of winter is a great time to prune your perennials and get them looking clean and tidy for spring. The
best place to prune is just above any new growth that is starting to show. You will also want to remove any
annual plants and debris that are leftover in flower beds and plant pots.
3.Weed
Weeds can start to get out of control over winter as we tend to have more rain and spend less time caring for
our lawns and garden beds. A great time to weed is just after rain as your soil will be moist and the weeds will
be easier to pull out. You will need a fork for flat weeds and a trowel for any with deep roots. You can find a
great range of organic weed killers at your local hardware store for those stubborn, hard to remove weeds.

4. Mulch
Mulch is another great tool for keeping your garden looking neat and tidy and keeping weeds under control. It is
a good idea to remove last year’s mulch and leave your soil to breathe and warm up before adding any new mulch.
5. Feed
Spring is the perfect time to give all your trees, plants, and shrubs a good feed. There are two main types of
fertiliser available, water-soluble and granular and both can be found at your local hardware store. Keep an eye
on the weather forecast and try not to fertilise before heavy rain as nutrients can be washed away.
6. Edge garden beds
Nothing says neat and tidy like the well-defined lines of a garden bed. Lawns and grass have a tendency to creep
off into our garden beds so you may need to recreate an edge with a spade, remove any turf and hone the edges
with hand shears.
7. Prepare your lawn
Our lawns can start to look a bit sad during the winter months as they tend to get less sun. Revitalize your
lawn by clearing any leaves and fallen debris, remove any large, deep-rooted weeds by hand or apply a
water-soluble weed and feed to the entire lawn, then add grass seed and fertiliser to any troubled areas.
8. Plant
Add some colour and give your garden an instant lift with some beautiful spring annuals. Some of our favourites
are snapdragons, lobelia, and sunflowers. Take the time to plan out your garden beds, taking into account the
needs of the individual plant including how much sun and space it will need.

9. Install irrigation
After last year’s record temperatures and imposed water restrictions it may be a good time to look into
installing an irrigation system to any lawns, hedges, and plants that are sensitive to high temperatures and
drought. We find drip irrigation to be a really great and cost-effective option.
10. Maintain hardscaping
Take a look over all your hardscaping. Replace or repair any broken pavers, decking boards, or hard surfaces
such as bricks or concrete. Take a look at any fences or decking that may need a new coat of paint or stain. It
is also a great time to check any latches, handles, and locks that may need replacing or fixing, especially
around pool areas.
